Watervliet Arsenal, known as America’s Cannon Factory, is an Army owned and operated manufacturing facility located in upstate New York, just outside of Albany. Constructed in 1813, the Arsenal has played a vital role in America’s defense throughout its long history producing large bore cannon and a wide variety of other products for military needs. It is also home to the Army’s Benet Laboratories. This arrangement of research, development and manufacturing at a single site facilitates concurrent design and manufacturing concepts.

DUTIES:

Serve as member of a fire fighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property. Respond to alarms and combats fire requiring the full performance of fire fighting tasks of moderate difficulty involving structures, equipment, and facilities. Drive firefighting equipment to and from scene of fire; positions vehicles so that maximum utilization may be made of its facilities and equipment. Maintain proficiency in operation of equipment. Perform maintenance, operational, housekeeping, emergency & standby duties. Operate alarm room equipment including radio & fire reporting facilities. Perform as member of a team in controlling spills that may be of a hazardous & often times unknown substance. Train for & is proficient in toxic /dangerous materials containment requiring fully protective clothing & subsequent decontamination procedures. Perform fire protection inspections. Use chemicals, axes, bars, gas masks & other firefighting equipment to extinguish fires, protect life & property.

General Schedule

  • SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Qualified applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal Service.Specialized Experience is experience that demonstrated the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position. This includes knowledge of firefighting and fire prevention theory and techniques in order to carry out fire protection and prevention programs and operations. Such experience may include: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:(1) Applicants must possess Certifications for Firefighter I; Firefighter II and Hazmat Operations and they must be certified by either DoD; Pro-Board or IFSAC to be qualifying certifications .

    (2)Applicants must possess a valid State Drivers License and be able to obtain and maintain a Government Drivers License;

    (3) Applicants must obtain and maintain a New York State EMT Certification within 18 months of hire date and maintain it by regular recertification;and

    (4) Applicants must obtain and maintain Hazardous Materials Technician level within 12 months of hire date.

    THIS POSITION INVOLVES DUTIES WHICH ARE SUBJECT TO RESOURCE CONSERVATION AND RECOVERY ACT (RCRA) REGULATIONS REGARDING HAZARDOUS WASTES.
