Undertakes research and provides scientific information to advance our knowledge of our surroundings. Serves American Indians, Alaska Natives, and affiliated island communities. Works with States to restore abandoned mine land sites and protects communities. Manages 388 national park units and 542 wildlife refuges. Employs over 75,000 individuals at approximately 2,400 locations across the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories, and freely associated states who work with thousands of state, local, and public interest groups to help cities and towns address their natural resource needs.

DUTIES: The Director, Office of Wildland Fire (OWF) has the authority and responsibility for overseeing and coordinating the Department’s implementation of the National Fire Plan, 2001 Wildland Fire Policy update and recommendations, and evolving legislated mandates. The Director, OWF reviews and coordinates the budget allocations and appropriations requests for wildland fire management in concert with the four land-managing bureaus (BLM, BIA, FWS, and NPS) and the Department’s Office of Budget. The Director, OWF coordinates the Departments wildland fire management program policy, strategic planning and performance measures with the USDA Forest Service, state governments and other stakeholders. The Director, OWF is also responsible for providing departmental guidance, policy, and oversight in accordance with congressional mandates and GAO audit recommendations to the wildland fire management agencies. Director, OWF is the wildland fire management liaison with congressional members, GAO, OMB and other Federal political appointees. The Director, OWF also provides liaison to the National Interagency Fire Center, Boise, Idaho, where the four land management bureaus coordinate operational aspects of their fire program.
