Starting pay is $4372 to $5136 per month depending upon qualifications
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Responds to emergency calls to provide fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, and fire prevention duties as assigned to the public; other responsibilities include maintenance of fire stations, equipment, and apparatus; participates in drills and training activities and is actively involved in public relation events as scheduled.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direct supervision of a company officer or assigned designee who assigns work details and reviews work for conformance with departmental policy.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Responds to emergency situations and performs fire suppression, emergency medical services or other tasks as needed; participates as a team member; performs work requiring strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, and working in confined spaces or at significant heights from ladders while wearing protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus; works within the chain of command and follows orders, rules, policies, standard operating guidelines and detailed directions; makes rapid decisions to take appropriate action if needed.
2. Operates diverse equipment such as hoses, self-contained breathing apparatus, a variety of hand tools, power equipment, saws, ladders, fire extinguishers, ventilation equipment, radios, rescue and extrication equipment, and specialized medical equipment.
3. Responds to a variety of hazardous material incidents and performs duties according to department guidelines.
4. Assists in preparation of pre-fire plans and development of information resources about industrial, commercial, multiple dwelling occupancies and other target hazards; actively participates in building familiarization tours.
5. Recognizes and preserves evidence pertaining to a fire’s point of origin; assists with fire cause determination under direction of a Fire Department officer or fire investigator.
6. Participates in fire, emergency/rescue drills and other fire service training; keeps up-to-date on the latest trends, methods, policies, and procedures; takes periodic written and practical exams.
7. Teaches basic fire prevention techniques at schools; conducts tours of fire apparatus and facilities.
8. Participates in providing specialized training to other firefighters.
9. Participates in the routine maintenance of apparatus, fire stations, and grounds.
10. Operates computers as required.
11. Drives and operates a variety of fire apparatus and vehicles; has a working knowledge of city streets and layout.
12. Accurately prepares and develops reports and records as required.
13. Performs initial patient assessment and administers appropriate medical treatment, either basic or advanced, as determined by the employee’s certification level and scope of practice.
14. Performs lifting and moving patients; is required to touch, evaluate, move or extricate dead or dying human beings and/or animals.
15. Directs or assists other EMT’s in-patient care, assessment, packaging, and transportation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Current Fire suppression and prevention techniques, practices, and methods;
- Fire protection systems, including sprinkler, alarm systems and fire hydrant locations;
- Standard firefighting practices, methods, and procedures;
- Safety standards, procedures, and precautions utilized in firefighting activities;
- City geography and street system and locations of major buildings or geographical landmarks;
- Emergency medical care practices;
- The safe and appropriate use of firefighting equipment, related tools and equipment.
Skill in:
- The use of firefighting, medical, and communication equipment;
- The use of hand tools and power tools;
- Reasoning and reacting quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Ability to:
- Apply principles and techniques of modern firefighting prevention, suppression, investigation, and all other aspects of firefighting;
- Maintain composure under adverse conditions such as heavy smoke, critical injuries, and death;
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions accurately;
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
- Climb ladders, handle hose, and lift heavy objects;
- Work in confined spaces and at considerable heights;
- Perform strenuous and prolonged work while wearing self-contained breathing apparatus;
- Be self motivated;
- Use office and computer equipment;
- Work harmoniously with other employees;
- Establish and maintain effective, courteous, and tactful working relationships with superiors, other employees, and the general public;
- Achieve and maintain an adequate level of physical strength, agility, and endurance to perform the essential functions of the position;
- Work irregular hours;
- Perform required work safely;
- Maintain departmental records and reports as required.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Training, experience, and certification levels required:
- High school diploma or equivalent, preferably supplemented by college-level course work in fire science or related field; and
- State of Oregon Emergency Medical Technician Basic level certification or higher; or a National Registry of EMT’s Emergency Medical Technician-Basic card or higher and the ability to obtain Oregon reciprocity within 6 months of hire;
- Certified as Firefighter I or higher as accredited by N.F.P.A. or the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
Other Qualifications:Applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years of age by the date of appointment;
- Possession of a valid State Driver’s License, and a safe driving record;
- Be in good physical health as determined by a medical examination.
Special Qualifications:
English/Spanish Bilingual skills desired.
