The San Jose Fire Department is currently accepting applications for Firefighter Lateral (EMT) and Firefighter Lateral (Paramedic). Firefighters will immediately begin a Fire Academy training program. Upon successful completion of training, Firefighters will be assigned to shift work. The probationary period for the Firefighter classification is one year.
Depending on Department need, preference may be given to Firefighter Lateral (Paramedic) candidates.
Firefighters with bilingual language skills (Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese) and experienced Fire-fighter Paramedics are encouraged to apply.
Additional premium pay is available for candidates with special skills:
– 3% EMT premium and 5.623% holiday pay in addition to base salary;
– 12% (of top step) Paramedic premium (Premium will be paid upon accreditation by SJFD);
– $29.00 biweekly for certified bilingual skills (Spanish, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian or Tagalog). Premium is paid upon certification by SJFD;
– $35.00 biweekly for AA/AS in Fire Science. .
Minimum Qualifications
To be considered, possession of the following Minimum Qualifications are required by the final filing date, February 4, 2013, unless otherwise specified. FOR BOTH FIREFIGHTER (EMT) AND FIREFIGHTER (PARAMEDIC) positions:
– Twelve (12) months of paid, full-time employment within the last 36 months as a sworn uniformed firefighter in any city, county, state or federal agency (Seasonal employees may be considered if they meet the service requirements described above and are eligible for re-hire by their agency, subject to verification.)
– Possession of a current and valid certification as a State of California Firefighter I.
– At least 18 years of age.
– Graduation from High School or equivalent (G.E.D. or California Proficiency Certificate).
– Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
– CPAT certification card which is not more than six (6) months old (as of February 4, 2013). (If you do not have a CPAT certification card, you must obtain one and submit it to the Department no later than April 1, 2013.)
REQUIRED LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR FIREFIGHTER (EMT):
– Possession of a current and valid State of California certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-1 (EMT-1).
REQUIRED LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR FIREFIGHTER (PARAMEDIC):
Proof of Paramedic Licensure and Certification as demonstrated by:
– Documentation of successful completion of an approved paramedic training program and successful completion of the National Registry of EMT-Ps written and practical examinations by the date of the written examination and actual possession of a current and valid paramedic license issued by the State of California Emergency Medical Services Authority by the final filing date, or
– Possession of a valid EMT-P certification from another state, territory, country and registration with the National registry of EMT-Ps by the date of the written examination and actual possession of a current and valid paramedic license issued by the State of California Emergency Medical Services Authority by the final filing date, or
– Possession of a current and valid Paramedic license issued by the State of California Emergency Medical Services Authority by the final filing date.
In addition, Firefighter-Paramedic candidates must have current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications to be considered.
Persons who are not currently fully licensed and certified as a Paramedic as described above may not apply at this time for the Firefighter (Paramedic). Persons currently enrolled in a Paramedic School (Didactic and Skills Training), completing their Hospital and Clinical Training or completing their Field Internship are also not eligible to apply at this time.
