The Los Padres National Forest is currently advertising to fill a Forest Fire Management Officer (Chief)position. The work station is located at the Supervisor’s Office, Goleta, California. This notification is being circulated to inform prospective applicants of this opportunity and to determine interest. DUTIES: This is a standard wildland fire management position intended for use in the USDA Forest Service. The primary responsibility is to provide short and long-range fire management planning, program direction and coordination, and evaluation of the fire management program on the unit. The incumbent serves as a key member of the Forest Leadership Team, supervises a group of employees performing work at the GS-11/12 level, and directs suppression actions on multiple incident situations with multiple firefighting and associated resources. Responsible for budget planning. Coordinates and directs fire prevention, detection, and suppression operations. Develops fire management plans to achieve resource management objectives. Administers cooperative agreements with Federal, state, and local agencies and private industry. Provides advice and guidance, including interpretations, opinions, or decisions, regarding programs or policies. Consultations involve assessment of program or policy conditions, phenomena, or anomalies. Performs the administrative and human resource management functions relative to the staff supervised. Plans, schedules, and assigns work to subordinates. Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff members; provides feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance. Provides advice, counsel, and/or instruction to staff members. Recommends or approves appointments, selections, or reassignments to positions appropriate to the selection authority delegated. Effects disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area. Carries out Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and program activities. This position is categorized as a High Complexity Forest Fire Management Officer (FFMO) in the Forest Service Fire Program Management (FS-FPM) Standard and Guide as designated by the W.O. Fire and Aviation Management. The FS-FPM minimum qualification standards (MQS) for this position must be attained by October 1, 2013, and thereafter must be met prior to entrance into the position as a condition of hire. Prior wildland firefighting experience on the fireline is a mandatory requirement. Position is approved for Secondary Firefighter retirement for under 5 USC 8336(c) (CSRS) and 8412(d) (FERS). UC Santa Barbara, Westmont University, Cal Poly State University, as well as many other reputable community colleges reside within the effective commute areas of the basin. Housing in the surrounding communities is a challenge while working on the Los Padres National Forest. Home prices can range from $375,000 or greater in the surrounding communities and can escalate well over $6,000,000 in some communities adjacent to the forest.
