A story announced on the IAFF’s website on March 19, 2012, stated Illnois Firefighters and Associated Firefighters of Illnois (AFFI) are stepping in the Republican nomination process and say “no” to the 2012 Republican Presidential candidate, Mitt Romeny. He has made it clear of his opposition to critical public safety programs including Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) and assistance to Firefighters (FIREACT).
Ads have been blanketing the State through many of their stations. On March 20, 2012, KCPQ 13 (A Seattle Broadcasting channel) reported Republican Presidential favorite ahead of his counterparts with 47% of the vote for Illnois. It was stated that he must have a total of percentage of the votes to be win the election, not electoral. He announced he was the winner of the race while another close tie with running mate, Santorum was right behind him stating he had won the election.
SAFER has put 5,000 firefighters back to work across the United States. Last year, FEMA provided $10.2 million dollars to Fire Departments in grants to hire or retain firefighters.
It should be interesting to hear who actually won the election in Illnois and where firefighters will stand after everything is said and done.
