This is the entry-level position for a uniformed officer in the Fire Bureau and is a union position, covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Lancaster and the Lancaster Professional Firefighters Association Local 319.

 

Firefighting is specialized, technical work involving many different responsibilities. Firefighters are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of firefighting apparatus en route to and at the scene of a fire and for participating in firefighting activities. Although the operation of apparatus and participating in firefighting activities are the most difficult and responsible parts of the job, a large part of the time is spent in fire prevention. Some of the specialized assignments include; hazardous materials mitigation, emergency medical services and various levels of rescue ranging from confined space rescue to vehicle rescue.

 

A Firefighter:  Performs firefighting duties; raises and climbs ladders; uses chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, hose lines and other equipment; ventilates burning buildings, removes persons from danger, throws salvage covers and removes debris. Uses specialized rescue and medical equipment to assist persons trapped or injured in various accidental situations. Drives various types of firefighting automotive equipment and operates pumps, aerial ladders, and auxiliary equipment. Checks apparatus on a daily basis, inspects and maintains equipment.

 

Among the Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities are:

 

  • Aptitude for mechanical work.
  • Ability and strength to do prolonged and arduous work under hazardous conditions.
  • Ability to learn within a reasonable working test period.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

 

Position Requirements

 

  • Education: High School graduate. GED accepted
  • Age: Applicant must be 18 years of age at the time of appointment to a Firefighter position. The applicant must supply satisfactory evidence of date of birth 
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently
  • Successful completion of the Civil Service written examinations
  • Successful passing of a medical examination , including drug screening
  • Successful passing of a psychological evaluation
  • Successful passing of a criminal background investigation, employment, personal, drivers’ record, and credit check and physical, psychological and drug rests to the satisfaction of the City
  • At the time of employment, the Firefighter must live within a 13-mile radius of Lancaster City.

 

Current Benefit Package  

  • Salary: $40,573 to start, up to $52,785
  • Longevity Pay from 1.25% to 7.75% of base pay.

  • Vacation:   From 14 days to 23 days per year.
  • Sick time: From 21 days per year to a maximum accrual of 276 days with an annual bonus for no/minimal sick time used.
