The Fire Chief classification is responsible for directing and managing the operations of the City’s Fire Department, which include: managing staff to include hiring and firing decisions; developing and implementing short and long-range goals; developing and enforcing operating policies and administrative guidelines; preparing and managing the department’s budget; and establishing operational and performance standards.

| ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: |
|
Regular attendance is an expectation of all positions.
Directs and oversees the activities of the fire department with multiple divisions to include: overseeing the development and administration of policies, procedures, programs, goals and objectives.
Prepares and administers a budget; prepares cost estimates for budget recommendations; submits justifications for budget items; monitors and controls expenditures.
Consults with city officials relating to fire fighting, emergency medical services, and other related services.
Identifies opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures; reviews with appropriate management staff; implements improvements. Ascertains the need for and type of additional equipment and facilities required to handle emergencies; makes technical decisions as to the best methods of extinguishing fires.
Identifies resource needs and makes budgetary recommendations based on department need.
Responds to alarms and directs activities at the scene of large fires or incidents.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

| MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: |
|
Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, fire technology, or related field; and 10 or more years of firefighting experience, including 5-7 years of management experience. National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Certification preferred.
