Communications Officer
NOTE: THIS IS A NON-BENEFITED TEMPORARY POSITION NOT OVERTIME ELIGIBLE.
(6 month position/40 hours per week)

Bellevue College Public Safety is currently seeking a customer service oriented individual to fill the position of Communications Officer. The Communication Officers are the vital link between campus officers and other department personnel and the information they need to function in the field.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Operate various communications equipment to transmit, receive and relay Public Safety Department information.

This involves interacting with and communicating with members of the public, campus community, and employees of the Department, in person or by telephone, e-mail or other methods.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUCTIONS:

Operate multi-frequency two-way radio communication and data recording equipment, computer work stations, and multi-line telephone devices.

Monitor fire and other security alarms.

Monitor campus wide emergency phones.

Maintain Dispatch System — receiving, entering and dispatching calls for service.

Serve as the primary initial contact for the department, directing callers, walk-ins to appropriate service area; forward messages to appropriate personnel.

ADMINSTRATIVE FUNCTIONS: 

Receive and document found property turned in to the Department.

Working with Lock Shop, receive and disburse keys, access control devices for campus personnel (issued) and vendors/contractors (daily check-out).

Perform other work as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

• High School Diploma
• Ability to pass a background check
• Excellent customer service skills
• Ability to prioritize
• Attention to detail
• Experience dealing effectively with difficult customers over the phone and in person
• Experience dealing with callers who may be in emergency situations
• Tactful phone communication skills
• Ability and willingness to act as a professional representation of Bellevue College

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or Social Sciences or 2 years equivalent in college level course credits.

• One year work experience in a fast-paced and multi-tasked public contact environment (e.g. bank teller, waiter) or a large public safety communications environment

• Previous security, police or military experience

• College level coursework in report writing knowledge and experience with gathering necessary information from callers in emergency situations.

• Knowledge of proper radio usage and communication

• Familiarity with reporting software and programs

REPORTS TO: Campus Security Sergeants, Director of Public Safety

HOURS: 9a.m. to 5p.m., Monday thru Friday

PAY: $12.00 – $17.00 per hour DOE
