HENRICO (WRIC) – A Henrico girl who fell through ice remains in critical condition.
The incident happened Sunday in a pond near the Treehouse Apartments on Wilkinson Road.
Fire officials say the 9-year-old may have been under water for 11 minutes before she was finally rescued.
Neighbors that live near the pond are not surprised and say this was growing concern that could’ve been prevented.
Demtrius Kelley has been worried something like this would happen.
“It actually hurts really bad,” he says. “It could be anybody’s child. It could even be your own child.
With no sign or fence, neighbors say kids are always playing in or near the woods where the pond is located and sometimes aren’t supervised.
“You don’t know what could be back there.”
What was there Sunday was a thin layer of ice over a retention pond that both a girl and one rescuer fell…
