Near Johannesburg, South Africa | Hundreds of illegal miners were working in an abandoned mine reportedly braving the dangerous environment to extract the gold.
About 11 were rescued by workers clearing some of the debris. The rescued miners were found to be dehydrated. Rescuers are in contact with about 20, but are reluctant to exit for fear of being arrested.
It has been stated that 200 are reportedly trapped down further down a steep climb inside the tunnel. Some of these miners have been in the tunnel since Saturday.
Information says that those who brave these conditions are mostly gangs trying to extract platinum and gold. Sometimes there are confrontations because of the high content of valuable gold and platinum.
Attempts to reach the remaining trapped people are on-going now.
