ABOUT THE U.S. COAST GUARD PACIFIC NW
The USCG PNW known as “District 13” is made up of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. More than 3,000 active duty and reserve members, civilian employees, and Coast Guard Auxiliarists are stationed in the Pacific Northwest.
Its presence was first established in the Pacific NW while 16 lighthouses were being installed along the coast from 1852 through 1858. Its presence was permanent in 1854 with the entry of the Revenue Cutter Jefferson Davis to Puget Sound. However, in today’s light, District 13’s HQ is located in Seattle with three Sector offices managing operations in the Puget Sound, the Columbia River, and North Bend, Washington State.
FERRY SYSTEM
The District (13) is home to the largest domestic ferry system in the U.S. moving 24 million passengers and 11 million vehicles annually across 10 routes, the 3rd largest domestic port, the 3rd largest cruise ship port, and the number one grain export gateway in the U.S. through the Columbia River.
EQUIPMENT AND RESOURCES
D13 also provides support and a homeport to Coast Guard Pacific Area assets including two high endurance cutters, three medium endurance cutters, two icebreakers, a port security unit, maritime safety and security team, and Base Seattle. It has an operational fleet of 21 Cutters, 132 Boats, and 11 Aircraft.

Sunday, June 4, 2023 – A man is rescued from a container ship who has had a heart attack.

May 31, 2023 – Man who fell off a cliff is rescued.
May 29, 2023 – Three people are rescued from a 17-foot boat taking on water.
Resources were deployed from the USCG Pacific Northwest after receiving a request for assistance around 0800 hours via the Sector Columbia River which received reports that a 17ft vessel was taking on water. Station Coos Bay and an MH-65 Dolphin from Air Station North Bend launched to respond. At approximately 0800 hours Station Coos Bay’s 47-foot motor lifeboat responded and was on the scene within 10 minutes. The individuals were found in the water wearing life jackets. Shortly after, the MH-65 Dolphin from Air Station North Bend arrived and lowered the swimmer to the 47-foot motor lifeboat to assist in first aid. The three individuals appeared to show signs of hypothermia. The individuals were transferred to emergency medical services. The 17-foot fishing vessel they were on was attempted to be recovered but it was fully submerged in the water. No threat of pollution was observed. May 20, 2023 – A stranded boat in Grays Harbor is assisted by the US Coast Guard PNW.

According to the US Coast Guard, for those in their ranks overall will conduct one of or more of the following daily activities:
- Save 10 lives.
- Seize 874 pounds of cocaine and 214 pounds of marijuana.
- Interdict 17 illegal immigrants.
- Conduct 14 fisheries boardings.
- Service 82 aids navigation.
- Investigate 35 pollution incidents.
- Facilitate the movement of $8.7 billion of goods and commodities through the maritime transportation system.
