The human-caused wildfire was sparked by an unknown source on Saturday, July 1, 2023, around 1118 hours MDT.

It is located about 20 miles east of Wikieup on the NW District in the Arizona Department of Forestry-owned lands. This is located in the Mohon Mountains in northwestern Yavapai County, Arizona.

The fire has consumed 32,148 acres of grass and Pinyon-Juniper fuels. It has a 5% containment status.

Fire management under the leadership of Darrell Willis, a Type 3 IC with the AZ Department of Forestry and Fire Management. There are about 162 total personnel from various agencies.

To just name a few Incident Cooperators include the following:

  • Hotshot crews
  • Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) hand crews
  • DFFM Phoenix Crew (Type 2 IA)
  • Large Air Tanker (LAT)

Fire Officials:

Northern Flank: Today a Large Air Tanker along with Single Engine Air Tankers were utilized on the northern flank of the fire. Crews are working along a road establishing containment lines to keep the fire from moving toward Cow and Trout Creeks. Activity is increasing on the east side of the fire as it backs down into Pine Canyon. Due to the terrain, it is being monitored by aircraft and a UAS platform. The steep and treacherous terrain makes it too risky to send crews in to engage currently, Crews may have to wait until the fire comes out of that terrain and into the flat country to begin suppression work.

Southwest Flank: On the southwest flank, the fire pushed back toward Adobe Creek, but resources are working to establish a containment line by tying it in with an existing road to keep the fire from pushing toward the Francis Creek area.

Resource / Logistics Group: Additional resources arrived today, including engines, medics, and logistical support. The fire is burning in remote country and at times, taking more than five hours to reach fire lines. Helicopters are supporting firefighters spiked out on the fire line by dropping food and necessary supplies into their camps.”
