Monday Fire Update: August 28, 2023, 1850 PDT

Incident Summary

The TYEE RIDGE COMPLEX has three wildfires in this complex, located 10 miles west of Sutherlin, Oregon.

Within the complex, the wildfires are displaying extreme fire behavior with crowning, uphill runs and spotting.,

Command of the fire is in Unified Command between the OR State Fire Marshal’s Office and ODF Team 1.

The cause of the fire is due to being sparked by lightning.

Fire Resources

According to the OR Station Fire Marshal’s PIO: “There are a total of seven Task Forces that have been sent on the wildfire which the Cougar Creek #1, Cougar Creek and the Rattlesnake Fires have all merged into one big fire.

Four Task Forces were assigned to work in Divisions Alpha, Charlie, Lima, and Foxtrot during the Day Operational Period and three during the Night Operational Period.

Two Task Forces will be working the Lighthouse Road #1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as the Tyee Mountain Fires.

Division Zulu – Wildfires in this Division

Big Tom Fire

The Big Tom Fire is known to the Operations Division Chief as one the biggest problems in that area along with additional other fires within this Complex.

Blue Hole Fire

Blue Hole Fire lines are continually holding and being improved.

Hardscrabble Fire

Last night, there was a slop over with a few acres over the line.

Division Sierra

Lighthouse Road Fires 1-4

Two of the fires have merged into one. The ODF Team 1 Sections Chief states they have brought in additional resources to help as this is in some really steep areas, which is helping tie in additional lines making it safe for everyone. Fire has been extremely active for the last few days.

Tyee Mountain Fire

A snag fell over a control line and caused the fire to go outside a few acres. Aerial and ground resources were able to address it and get it under control.

Division Foxtrot

Cougar Creek Fire

The Cougar Creek Fires were originally the Cougar Creek and the Cougar Creek 1 Fires which have merged into one and Command is calling it the Cougar Creek Fire only.

Current Status

There are approximately 656 total personnel along with 16 crews, 38 engines, and 12 helicopters assigned to this incident.

There have been 2,896 total acres of timber and light logging slash have been burned and firefighters have been able to reach a 5% containment status.

All evacuation notices issued by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office remain unchanged.  The Red Cross shelter for evacuees at the Oakland Elementary School will be relocating today and the new location will be posted to the Tyee Ridge Complex and Douglas County Sheriff’s Facebook pages as soon as it is available. To shelter livestock, contact Douglas County Fairgrounds at 541-957-7010. Companion pets can be sheltered at the Saving Grace Pet Adoption Center in Roseburg.
