Off-Duty Killed by Suspected Drunk Driver
Off-duty LAPD Police Officer 2, Darrell Cunningham was killed today in what Law Enforcement Officials was a preventable traffic collision.
MVA Location
The MVA occurred this morning at 0115 hours at the intersection of Roscoe Boulevard and Lindley Avenue in Northridge, California.
Driving in Excess of 100 mph Claims Two Lives
The off-duty Officer’s vehicle was struck by another car, a suspected drunk driver which was traveling in excess of 100 mph at the time of the collision.
The Officer had two other passengers. One of his two passengers also died (at the scene) and the other was transported to a nearby hospital with significant life-threatening injuries.
We send our sincere sympathies to his immediate family, LAPD police family, and to his friends and communities he served in.
Driver In Custody and Faces Serious Charges
The striking driver is currently in police custody and is under investigation for vehicular manslaughter.
Department Resource Support Family and Fellow Officers
His family and fellow Officers are being supported by department resources. He is survived by two children aged three and six, his fiancee’ and parents.
Authorized by Police Chief to Wear Mourning Bands
The Chief of Police has authorized the wearing of mourning bands in his honor.
