Vancouver Impacted by Widespread Rain and Floods

BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA — Many areas have been impacted by rain that continues to pour over the province. This is a summary for occurrences on October 16, 2024, through October 20, 2024.

BC Ferries

  • All sailings are held on October 18, due to the weather.

BC Hydro

  • Strong winds are knocking down trees and branches onto power lines. BC Hydro members are working around the clock to restore power and make it safer for the traveling public. Stay back at least 10 meters and call 9-1-1.

Coquitlam

  • A mudslide is said to have destroyed a home, prompting an extensive SAR mission as Fire/Police are unsure if there was anyone at the time of the incident on October 19, 2024. Sunday afternoon, first responders were said to still be searching on Quarry Road between Calgary Drive and MacInyre Road, which remains closed, according to Coquitlam RCMP Officials.

  • Pipeline Road has been washed out (reported by citizen on October 19, 2024, 2128 PDT)

Coquitlam River

  • One resident report: “The River is not safe as many paths are flooded and the current is strong. Stay away. This is the highest I have ever seen it.” (October 19, 2024.)

Kootenay Pass

  • Hwy 3 is covered in snow, bringing collisions and treacherous road conditions.

Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge

  • On the afternoon of October 19, 2024, reports that the area was raging.

Lynn Creek

  • Residents reported the creek was raging on October 19, the highest they have ever seen it in the last 20 years.

Lynn Valley Headwaters

  • Running at a rapid speed. (Witness reported on October 19, 2024)

MacDonald Creek

Mosquito Creek

  • The pedestrian path underpass at Marine Drive is flooded due to the water spilling over from the river. (October 19, 2024)

Noon’s Creek

  • Raging river on October 19th, as reported by local visitors.

North Vancouver –

  • Six properties in the District of North Vancouver were ordered to evacuate immediately on Sunday (2015 PT).
  • Local State of Emergency declared.
  • Six properties on Panorama Drive in Deep Cove.

Richmond

  • A handy dart bus gets stuck in the flooded streets, one of the latest casualties on Saturday.

Surrey

  • Flooded streets and cars, made for a busy day for firefighters and water rescues. Officials were warning those to shelter in place and off of roadways.

West Vancouver

  • CLOSED: WB/EB ramps to BC Hwy 1 at 21st Street are closed due to flooding, pooling water and popped manholes causing issues along Marine Drive Drive from Taylor Way to 24th Street, state the West Vancouver Police Department.

Important Note: The reception centre that had been set up at Mickey McDougall Recreation Centre on October 19, 2024, is now closed.

Weather Reports

  • Forecasters began releasing weather reports on October 16th, The south will see the impact of the next #AtmosphericRiver. Rain begins Fri for the South Coast, the West Coast of Vancouver Island & parts of the Central Coast: upwards of 150 mm expected by Sat on the Island’s west coast. (Source: ECCC Weather BC)
  • Vancouver Weather Station received 34.2mm of rain yesterday. Much more is on the way today and tomorrow. I’m now starting to think even Richmond hits triple digits here for rainfall by Sunday night in this Storm. This was our second wettest day of 2024. (Weather Forecaster, October 19, 2024)
  • As of Sunday, 0700 hours, Coquitlam has received about 8.43 inches of rain!
