Incident Summary

A truck carrying large bales of hay caught fire on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at 1400 hours PDT, causing a brush fire.

Location

The location of the incident is on I-90 westbound at mile post 125, approximately 15 miles East of Ellensburg, Washington.  It is near the Rye grass Rest Area.

Cause

Truck carrying large hale bales caught on fire. Fire spread from the shoulder into brush.

Fire Fuels

This is near the Ryegrass Rest Area. The brush fire is on the shoulder, moving East.

Fire Conditions

100 acres. Containment unknown, but 2 DNR helicopters making good progress.  One DNR helicopter unable to drop load due to a person in the way.  Unable to gain a target, so copter will just drop load in the black.

Resources

WA DNR 2 helicopters (from Ellensburg) and 4 engines. 1 dozer and local fire districts are on-scene.

Closures

Due to poor visibility on WB I-90, all lanes have been shutdown.  Traffic is being diverted to the Old Vantage Highway.  There is no ETA on when the roadway will be reopened.

NEW WA WILDFIRE | UPTANUM FIRE | 2

NEAR ELLENSBURG, WASHINIGTON

Incident Summary

A new wildfire has ignited approximately 4 miles South of Ellensburg in Kittitas County named the #UptanumFire as of 1920  hours PDT on Friday, June 30th.

(Correction:  We reported it as “Uptown” and it is actually “Uptanum”).

Size/Resources

It is currently 9 acres, prompting 3 engines and 2 rotors to respond.

Fire Weather

Current temps are 90*F with RH at 18% and winds from the SE at 5 mph.  There is a 10 mph visibility with conditions showing as clear.

Update

We are waiting for an update after resources arrive on-scene.
