Forty-four members graduate after six month training program)

On Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 2:00 pm, the Baltimore City Fire Department held a graduation ceremony for Firefighter/EMT Recruit Class #11-04. The ceremony took place at the Baltimore City (Frank Trenner) Fire Academy located at 6720 Pulaski Highway, Baltimore, Maryland 21237.

Forty-one recruits of the Baltimore City Fire Department and three members of the US Coast Guard graduated after completing nearly six months of intense training at the Education and Training Academy. The recruits obtained fire service related training in various modules that are intended to meet the basic fire safety training and professional requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The recruits obtained cognitive and psychomotor skills in the following disciplines; fundamentals of fire fighter safety, fire behavior, fire fighter level I and II, hazardous materials training, building construction, firefighter personal protective equipment, rescue and extrication, forcible entry, ground ladders and water supply, as well as fire detection , alarm and suppression.

Recruits also obtained training in Emergency Medical Services at the EMT/B level in addition to general knowledge related to fire department organization, role of the firefighter, the department’s mission as well as standard operating procedures, and rules and regulations. Some essential components of firefighter training involve fire department communications, fireground operations, operating self-contained breathing apparatus, self contained breathing apparatus and ladder pipe operations and much more.

Certified as Emergency Medical Technician/Basic (EMT-B) and Paramedics, these members will be able to provide basic and advanced life support care to the sick and injured citizens of Baltimore. All members are encouraged to pursue higher levels of training, certification and consider promotional opportunities within the ranks of the department.

The ceremony was attended by Honorable Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Mayor of Baltimore, Fire Chief James S. Clack, the fire department’s Management Team, Presidents of the Firefighters and Fire Officers Local Unions along with members of the department, well-wishers, family and friends.
