A public open house was held at Seattle Fire’s Beacon Hill neighborhood fire station #13 on Saturday, May 19th, from 1100 to 1300 hours after a recent remodel. The station was marked as a landmark in 2004. But originally more than 75 years ago, it has gone through several changes over the years with its recent upgrade and remodel being completed in April 2012; a sesimic retrofit in 2001 and an extensive expansion and rennovation in 1987.
This fire station houses one (1) Engine (Engine 13) and (1) Battalion Chief (B5) and a reserve Battalion unit serving the Southeast Seattle area.
The project was designed by The Hoshide Wanzer Williams Artchitects group.
The objective(s) of the plan were to do the following and have since been completed:
1) a seismic upgrade to bring the station up to current safety standards.
2) an addoption to accomodate new crew kitchen, dining and outside storage.
3) remodeled interior to provide space for support operations.
4) emergency generator.
5) new roof.
How the design, plan and construction was implemented:
February 2009: the Artitechts were selected for the project.
November 2009: Neighbors attended a schematic design open house to see the preliminary to design the project.
June 2010: Neighbors attended a design development open house to see the progress of the preliminary design and the fire engines.
September 2010: the City’s Landmark Preservation Board approved the exterior desing of the project.
May 2011: Beisley, Inc. was awarded the contract.
June 2011: The Battalion Chief was temporarily relocated to Fire Station #30 located at 2931 S. Mt. Baker Blvd. for the duration of the project.
July 2011: Construction began.
December 2011: Firefighters move to Station #14 off of 4th Avenue S ensuring continued response in their area.
Firefighters have completely moved in and are still trying to resolve kinks in the system as in any new (old) house moving back into.
