Fire Chief
The South Shore Fire Department is seeking an innovative leader with exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills to lead a newly formed consolidated fire department. Mount Pleasant is one of the fastest developing communities in Wisconsin. The fire district – Mt. Pleasant and Sturtevant have a combined population over 32,000 and cover 36 sq. miles. The area provides a high quality of life due to the mix of natural resources, recreation and cultural activities, and its proximity to Lake Michigan, Milwaukee, Chicago, and other quaint communities in the area.
In 2009, the Mt. Pleasant and Sturtevant Fire Departments consolidated forming the South Shore Fire Department. Since that time, the 52+ full time firefighter/paramedics have formed a unified department; however, still have some challenges that must be resolved; thus, the Police & Fire Commission are seeking an individual with proven administrative, communication, strategic planning skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions to ensure the success of the department so that it continues to provide quality services to the community it serves.
The position is hired by an independent Police & Fire Commission; however, governance is through an oversight board made up of representatives of both the Villages of Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant. Thus, the ability to be politically astute in acting as a liaison between the Commission, Oversight board, employees, union representation and the public is critically essential.
The Fire Chief must possess demonstrated leadership, supervisory, employee relations, and budgetary skills together with a strong background in an integrated Fire and EMS Service (Paramedic certification – at some point required). Bachelor’s degree and/or National Fire Academy EFO certification required with a min of 5 yrs demonstrated management experience in a senior management position in a predominately career department is required. A demonstrated history of achieving positive labor relations (union environment) and public communication skills is strongly recommended. The ability to work cooperatively with neighboring departments whether career, paid on-call, and/or volunteer is essential.
