POSITION:  Student Firefighter (Temporary)

EMPLOYER:  University of Alaska Fire Department – Fairbanks

REQUIREMENTS: 

*Must be 18 years of age by time of hire.
*Must posses a valid Alaska Drivers License or be able to obtain one within 30 days (must adhere to Driving Record Standard at http://www.uaf.edu/fire/employment/).
*Must have a candidate physical ability test (CPAT) issued by the University Fire Department or any approved testing agency; pass a written general knowledge test, oral interview and background check; including criminal history and driving history.
*Must be eligible for student employment and eligible to work over 20 hours a week.
*Must maintain a 2.0 semester/cumulative grade point average (GPA) and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours of University coursework per regular semester. 

MAJOR DUTIES FOR POSITION:

 1. Participates in daily assigned apparatus maintenance and equipment checks.
2. Participates in repairs of apparatus and equipment.
3. Participates in daily station duties/house cleaning.
4. Maintains personal protective gear (PPE).
5. Observes the Department operating guidelines, rules, regulations and policies.
6. Maintain uniform/image/conduct to the highest professional standard.
7. Meet training and vehicle certification benchmarks.
8. Attend college classes.

LENGTH OF TIME & TYPE OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION:

Alaska State Firefighter 1 certification is required by date of hire. Reciprocity available for IFSAC and Pro-Board Firefighter 1 certifications through the State of Alaska Fire Standards Council. (Firefighter 1 Academy available through UAF Community Technical College (CTC) beginning July 15 through August 23, 2013). If certified, attach a copy of FF1 certificate as Supplemental Attachment 3.  

PREFERRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES FOR THIS POSITION:

EMT 1 preferred, but not required at date of hire. If certified, attach a copy of EMT 1 certificate as Supplemental Attachment 4.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require
the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.
