On Dec. 1, four incidents of mailbox theft were reported just north of Sammamish city limits. In all cases, the thieves targeted locations with multiple mailboxes. With similar targets scattered throughout Sammamish, local police are asking residents to help them fight back.

“These incidents seem to increase as the holidays approach,” Sammamish Detective Bill Albright said. “We’d really like our residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity right away so we have a chance to apprehend people who may be guilty of theft.”

At this time of year, mailboxes tend to fill up with gift cards, small amounts of cash and other seasonal items thieves find attractive. Albright says some thieves have been known to follow delivery trucks around town.

“If someone suspicious gets out of a vehicle and goes to a mailbox location, it would be great if residents could get a license plate number and immediately call 9-1-1,” Albright said. “That increases our chances of finding them before they leave town.”

A call to 9-1-1 is the quickest way to reach Sammamish Police and get them on the case. In a non-urgent situation, though, residents may also call the police station at 425-295-0770.
