Fires are not just happening in the Northwest States such as Washington State, Oregon and Idaho, but others such as California.  We wanted to give a glimpse into a few fires happening in nearby States and across our Nation.

We have not captured all of them in this post but this gives you a quick peek into what’s happening in the State of California.

We’ll be adding more as time allows.

CUESTA FIRE

The Cuesta Fire started when a vehicle was parked on Hwy 101, that ignited the grass. It was only a few acres when firefighters initially arrived but due to the dry and windy conditions, it quickly grew to a wildfire.  Other fires such as timber and brush were also scorched. The fire initially began on August 16, 2015, around 1814 PDT and has grown to 3,500 acres.  It is listed at being 75% contained.

The Fire incident is being managed by CALFire IMT Team 4 under Unified Command between CALFire and the USFS.

There are 1710 firefighters assigned to this fire.  Resources: 57 hand crews, 103 engines, 27 dozers, 26 water tenders, 6 helicopters.  In the next few days, Fire Managers will demobilize excess fire resources.

GASQUET COMPLEX

This long burning fire started on August 3, 2015, from lightning striking the area around 1800 PDT. It is located in the Gasquet Ranger District area in the Six Rivers National Forest.  It has several fires listed in this Complex.

Coon Fire:  5257 acres. Bear Fire:  4957 acres. Peak:  5178 acres. Feeder:  795 acres.

All 4 fires list a total acreage of 16,187 with a 15% containment status.

There are 626 personnel assigned to this fire, along with resources of 7 hand crews, 34 engines, 2 airtankers and 5 helicopters.

Community Meeting:  Monday, 8/24/15 at 1900 PDT at the Crescent City Fire Protection District Station, located at 255 W Washington Street in Crescent City, CA.

HORSE FIRE

The Horse Fire is managed by the CAL Fire IMT 5 that began on August 18, 2015, around 1830 PDT from an unknown ignition cause.  It is currently under investigation.

The Fire is staffed with 955 personnel from BLM, CDCR, CCC, Humboldt Co Sheriff Office and OES, Shelter Cove and Briceland Fire Departments.  Resources include: 32 engines, 34 crews, 9 helicopters, 19 dozers, 30 water tenders.

The incident is located at Saddle Mtn Rd, approximately 6 miles NE of Shelter Cove on the King Range National Conservation area.  Listed at 58% containment with 146 acres burned.

NICKOWTIZ FIRE

The Nickowitz Fire is located at Nickowitz Peak in the Six Rivers NF in California.  This fire ignited on August 1, 2015 around 1130 PDT from a lightning strike.  Fire fuels include: timber, chaparral and tall grass.

The fire is listed at a 53% containment status with 558 burned acres.

There are 391 personnel assigned along with 6 crews, 23 engines and 2 helos.  Incident Cooperators include:  the Karuk and Yarok Tribes, USFS, Modoc NF

PETERSON FIRE

The Peterson Fire is being managed by the CAL Fire-Sonoma, Napa, Lake Unit, located off of Peterson Lane and Adobe Creek Rd, near Kelseyville, CA.  989 personnel from Kelseyville FD, South Lake FFD, Lake County Sheriff Office, PG&E and CDCR are assigned to this incident including resources of 41 engines, 41 crews, 3 helicopters, 10 dozers and 9 water tenders.

ROUGH FIRE

The Rough Fire is located approximately 2 1/2 miles to the SW of Spanish Mtn and 5 miles N of Hume Lake.  The fire was ignited when lightning struck the area on July 31, 2015.

There are 2126 personnel on scene along with Incident Cooperators from the American Red Cross, CALFire, CA Conservation Corps, CHP, CAL Trans, Fresno Co Sheriff Office, Office Of Emergency Management and PGE.

The fire has burned 49,440 acres causing losses to timber, chaparral and tall grass but reaching a successful 7% containment status.  However, it is still listed as being active, crowning with uphill runs and short-range spotting.

There has been 0 reports of drone flights but Fire Managers wish to make the public aware that Drones in Fire Zones cause them to have to halt air resources, making it dangerous for them, ground resources and the public. #NoDronesInFireZones

SUMMIT FIRE

The Summit Fire started on Sunday, August 23rd around 1225 hours near Snow Summit Ski resort just South of Big Bear Lake,at Knickerbocker Road and Pine Knot in the San Bernardino National Forest.  The cause is unknown at this time.

It is listed at 100 acres with a 30% containment.

  • From Knickerbocker Rd East to Georgia Rd
  • South of Pennsylvania Rd to the Forest boundary

WALKER FIRE

The Walker Fire is located north of Walker Lake & north of June Lake Loop in the Inyo NF of Mono County.  This fire started on August 14, 2015 around 2131 hours PDT from a human unknown caused ignition.

It is now listed at 3,676 acres with an 81% containment.

Personnel of 231 remain assigned to this fire incident, though an A BAER (burned area emergency response team) is on scene.
