World Tsunami Awareness Day

World Tsunami Awareness Day occurred on this day in 2022, which is aimed at promoting a global understanding of tsunami threats and emphasizing the importance of preparedness, early warning alerts, and resilient communities. The UN adopted this special day in December of 2015, in response to Japan’s initiative and the subsequent proposal by 142 member States. For those of us in the United States, it is a big reminder of the 1964 Alaskan Quake and Tsunami which destroyed major parts of Alaska, BC, California, and Hawaii. It took more than 130 lives. According to the UN, they state by 2030, 50% of the world will live in or near coastal areas exposed to flooding, storms, and/or tsunamis.
