Today, a dry cold frontal passage is expected to arrive in the area around midday. This will bring temperatures in the 60’s in the valley’s and 50’s along ridgelines, lower humidity and shifting winds 8-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Additional concern will be terrain-aligned accelerations and strong gusts in saddles and chutes. Moderate fire spread is expected on the east flank due to these conditions.

Crews on the Porcupine Complex will continue to contain the fire east of Forest Road 285 using point protection, monitor fire activity utilizing the Green Mountain Lookout, and patrol for spot fires. Point protection involves protecting specific points from the fire while not actively trying to line the entire fire edge. Points being protected may be communities, individual homes, communication sites and areas of high resource value such as roads.

Yesterday, the weather conditions were sunny with slightly warmer temperatures and lower humidity with mainly terrain driven winds. Fire activity was low. A smoldering and creeping fire was observed throughout most of the effected area, with individual and group tree torching on the E/SE area of the fire. Crews removed hose and patrolled Forest Road 285 for spot fires and hazardous trees.

A Special Area Closure is in effect for the portion of the complex on the Nez Perce National Forest (Click “Closures” for additional closure information). The Magruder Corridor Road (FR 468) is closed from the junction of the Green Mountain Road (FR 285) to Observation Point for public safety due to fire activity.

The Incident Command Post (ICP) is located at the old Red River Ranger Station.
