Fire Summary
A fire burning in the Mixons Hammock was discovered on March 5, 2016, by employees of the Stephen C. Foster State Park located in Foster, Georgia.
Cause
On March 3rd, a storm front bringing lightning started the fire on Mixons Hammock area, of many small islands in the Okefenokee Swamp.
Access
Access to this island is by boat only from Billy’s Lake.
Closures
The State Park was closed at the time of the last press release on March 8, 2016, until further notice.
Damage Assessment
The fire had five acres within the perimeter that had not burned, so burn out operations were completed on March 8, 2016.

The fire was said to be approximately 300 yards from the public boat dock.
A total of 50 acres was scorched. This was verified by an air flight.
No injuries were reported.
Future Activity
Minimal fire activity is expected. This is the final report.
