Mother’s Day, A Holiday Celebrated Throughout the World

Christian Festival

The History of this Special Holiday clearly shows it has been in existence since the early times when in modern times, a Christian festival called “Mothering Sunday” was held annually on the 4th Sunday in Lent.  These festivals were seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “Mother Church”, a local church close to their homes. Held in the U.K. and parts of Europe, the Christian based celebratory Holiday would lose popularity and fading in the distance.  The event would eventually merge with the secular American’s Mother’s Day in the 1930’s and 1940’s.

Honoring Goddesses

Some form of Mother’s Day also dates back to the time of the Greeks and Romans honoring Goddesses Rhea and Cybele.

American Incarnation

The American incarnation of the Holiday of Mother’s Day, when Anna Jarvis’ mother passed away and she honored her at the funeral along with other mothers in 1908.  The American holiday would become the official of all Moms in 1914, observed the

Anna would later attempt to get the Holiday removed from calendars due to objecting to the widely commercialization.  This would be her highest priority and time spent in her last years of life. Traditions are all about the presentation of flowers, cards and gifts. This American holiday is on the second Sunday in May.
