SIT REP 1 | June 5, 2021 | 2225 PT/MT

INCIDENT SUMMARY — A wildfire named the TELEGRAPH FIRE is located off of Highway 177, about five miles south of Superior on the south end of Old Telegraph Canyon and burning on the Tonto National Forest in the Globe Ranger District.

It was reported on Friday, June 4th around 1330 hours MT, according to Fire Officials.

FIRE BEHAVIOR — It is extreme with running, spotting and short-range spotting. It is said to be burning mostly in shrub and grass with very low fuel moisture in the area.

FIRE WEATHER — A RED FLAG WARNING has been issued as conditions deteriorate well into the weekend.

THREATENED — Structures and energy infrastructures are at risk and are threatened.

EVACUATIONS ARE IN EFFECT — Oaks Flat Campground, Town of Superior, Top-Of-The-World and Resolution East Plant and the Oaks Mobile Home Park.

Not an official evacuation notification. This is a SET-Be and Go Alert Notice. 150 residents are being impacted at this time. Listen to your local news media outlets or government Officials for more information.

TOWN OF SUPERIOR — “We are officially in SET mode. This does not mean you need to evacuate, but you must be prepared to leave at a moments notice. MAYOR MILA BESICH — “Our Town Manager and I attended a transition brief meeting this evening. This meeting was to connect all the agencies and prepare for the Type 1 team to come in tomorrow. Tomorrow morning there will be more information available and at some point hopefully a public briefing.

Once the Type 1 team gets into place there will be more resources. It is expected that this fire will continue to grow and crews will be working it through the coming week. Superior remains in a SET status. Meaning you should be set to leave should we be issued a GO order. While officials feel very confident that the fire line protecting Superior is strong, fire can be very unpredictable. Please remain ready to leave if needed. It is expected that US 60 will reopen in 2 hours. That closure is due to a fatal accident. Please continue to pray for our community and everyone who is working to protect out community.”

CLOSED — AZ SR 177, south of Superior and with impending closure south of US 60.

INCIDENT COOPERATORS — USFS – TNF, Pinal County Sheriff Office, Global Ranger District, Superior Police Department, AZ DOEQ.

RESOURCES — 1 hotshot crew, 2 hand crews, and 5 engines, with additional support from the State of Arizona, Gila District Bureau of Land Management, and Pinal County. A Type 1 Incident Management Team has been ordered.

SIZE UP — Fire has consumed 25,000 acres of shrub and grass. There is a zero-percent containment.

CAUSE — The cause is under investigation.

COST-TO-DATE — A minimum of $200,000 for fire suppression and containment costs-to-date as this morning’s update.
