The fire grew 218 acres yesterday and was most active on the southeast. Containment increased from 7 to 9 percent. Crews suppressed some spot fires yesterday. Helicopters had a full day of flying yesterday and expect another productive day today. Greg Poncin’s Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Management Team is shadowing the California team today in preparation for taking command of the incident tomorrow morning.

Idaho’s McGuire Complex consists of two fires: the McGuire (includes the former Bagley Fire) and Herman wildland fires, which were started by lightning on August 27, 2012. At its closest, the fire is about one mile east of Dixie, two miles south of Orogrande, and four miles southwest of Red River.

The McGuire Complex is burning in stands of subalpine fir & lodgepole pine with a large component of beetle-killed trees. Many areas of the fire have poor access and firefighters have limited safety zones. An area closure is in effect for public safety and to ensure unimpeded access for firefighters and equipment. Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests.

This complex of fires is being managed by California Interagency Incident Management Team 5 under the direction of Incident Commander Carlton Joseph. The Incident Command Post is located at the former Red River Ranger Station on Forest Road 222.

Fire Behavior
Mostly sunny conditions with higher temperatures, lower relative humidity, and light winds will result in moderate fire activity. Expect low fire-spread potential in the morning. The inversion will lift around 11:00 allowing for an increase in fire activity. Some torching and short-range spotting is likely in the mixed conifer fuels. Flame lengths could reach 5 to 10 feet. Peak fire activity will be between 12:00 and 5:00 p.m. today.

Significant Events
Northern Rockies Type I (Poncin) shadowed the California Type I IMT (Joseph) today and will assume command of the McGuire Complex on Saturday (09/29/12) at 6:00. A wildland Fire Module was inserted into the Gospel Hump Wilderness yesterday to limit the fire activity within the Wilderness. They are in coordination wiht the Resource Advisor to insure proper tactics are employed.
OutlookPlanned Actions
Crews will patrol active areas of the fire and mitigate hazard trees; continue to construct and improve control lines; cut and remove downed trees; and chip and remove slash. Resources will continue to improve structure protection in the Mallard Ranch area and continue to scout ahead of the fire for values at risk and opportunities to suppress the fire.
