The Black Forest Fire started on Tuesday, June 11th. The cause is undertermined. The fire is located in Black Forest, Colorado. Rich Harvey’s Great Basin Type 1 Incident Management Team took over management of the fire on Wednesday June 12th at 6 a.m.

This wind driven fire moved very quickly the first day. The current assessment has determined 502 structures have been destroyed and 18 were damaged. Several thousand residents were evacuated. As areas cool down and have been cleared of potential safety hazards, some residents are being allowed to return to their homes. Safety assessments of structures are ongoing. Multiple resources have been released as firefighters continue to make progress toward their containment objectives.

Fire Behavior Overnight RH recoveries last night were excellent reaching 100%. ERCs have stalled at the 83rd percentile. Primary file carrier is found in the understory duff and timber litter layers.
Significant Events There were a significant number of resources that have been release to include: 1 Type I helicopter, 2T2 crews, 3 water tenders, 21 engine and 1 dozer, due to resources continuing to meet management objectives.

Outlook

Planned Actions Continue to provide for life and safety as evacuations continue to be lifted. Locate and extinguish all hot spots while continuing perimeter control using direct attack as needed. Continue coordination with the utility companies, local/state/federal partners and El Paso County Sheriffs Office assessment team. Begin transition planning to a Type 4 organization.
