Big Windy Complex
25 miles NW of Grants Pass. 35% contained. 23,708 acres in size. 1,058 personnel. Lightning caused. Containment lines currently holding. Thunderstorms and more lightning expected. Limited work being done. Expected time for containment: 9/7/13.
Douglas Complex
Roseburg, OR. 48,679 acres in size.
- Rabbit Mountain Fire: 23,952 acres
- Dad’s Creek Fire: 24,464 acres
- Farmer Gulch Fire: 249 acres
- Misc small fires: 14 acres
83% contained. 25 Type 2 Crews (Medium), 37 Entines, 11 Dozers, 12 Water Tenders, 1,145 personnel. Estimated Cost so far, $49.4 Million.
Status: Light rain fell on the Douglas Complex this morning, helping crews with their mission of mopping up inside of the fireline. Crews are instructed to mop up at least 200 feet inside the fireline where the fire consumed most of the available ground-level vegetation. Where consumption was less complete, and the chance of flare-ups is higher, crews are mopping up 300-500 feet inside of the fireline.
Unburned islands of vegetation farther inside the burned area continue to flare up and burn out. These flare-ups are monitored, and helicopters are called in to drop buckets of water on the hot spots. This reduces the chance of embers floating across the fireline to cause spotfires.
Government Flats Complex
Prinville, OR. Briefing Updated 10pm. 20% containment. 3 fires in complex. 4 residences, 9 outbuildings have burned. $6.6 Million cost to date.
Fire Status: With Friday’s weather forecast again calling for westerly gusts of up to 30 miles per hour in the evening, conditions will remain at critical levels, with potential for extreme fire behavior and rapid rates of spread. The Blackburn Fire has the potential to become plume-dominated (with a developed column overriding the local environmental influences) and slope-driven. Strong winds out of the west, combined with steep canyon slopes, will challenge firefighters attempting to contain the blaze. Fire officials have stated there is a low to moderate risk the fire will move to the east and northeast through the North Fork Mill Creek drainage towards Ketchum Road and Thompson Ridge.
Structural fire engines and firefighters are continuing to secure and patrol homes and other structures along Obrist, Upper Mill Creek, and Reservoir roads, as well as the water treatment plant.
