Firefighter

• EMT Advanced 2% or Intermediate 5% or Paramedic 9.5%
• HazMat Team Assignment: 3%
• AA or AS Degree: $35/month
• Top step Paramedic Firefighter earns $6,534 per month

• Full-family, Medical, Dental, and Vision Care Insurance (employee pays $0).
• Medical Savings Program (HRA-VEBA) – 3.6% of gross wage contribution from the City plus $126.58 per month if employee chooses $1,500 health insurance deductible or $208.44 per month if employee chooses $3,000 health insurance deductible.
• $50,000 Life Insurance, AD&D, and Long Term Disability.
• Retirement – State of Oregon PERS/OPSRP Retirement Plan – 100% Fully City paid.  Eligible after six months of service unless already eligible.
• Annual accrual leave hours: 112 hours of vacation, 147 hours of holiday, and 168 hours of sick.  (See Benefits Tab for more details)

• EMT Basic certification, minimum
• Firefighter 1 certificate MUST be from NFPA, IFSAC, or DPSST.  May NOT be from a college or technical school.
• No tobacco use on or off duty for duration of employment
• Minimum 18 years of age
• Must posses a high school diploma or GED
• Valid Oregon Driver’s License upon hire
• Good physical condition
• Normal hearing and color vision discrimination

• EMT Intermediate or Paramedic
• Current Firefighting & EMS experience
• College Fire Science studies
• DPSST HazMat Technician
• NFPA Wildland Firefighter 1 or DPSST Wildland Interface Firefighter
• NFPA/DPSST Driver
• NFPA/DPSST Mobile Water Supply Operator
• NFPA/DPSST Wildland Fire Operator
• Spanish-speaking skills

• Ability to learn firefighting tactics & EMS techniques
• Ability to learn the operation & maintenance of firefighting equipment
• Ability to deal with injured patients, including fatalities
• Ability to understand and follow oral & written instructions
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Ability to make public presentations
• Ability to keep records & make reports
• Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with others in a group-living environment
• Ability to maintain strenuous physical activity for extended periods of time
• Ability to act calmly & effectively in emergency situations
• Ability to effectively function in an ethnically diversifying community

• Candidates that meet the minimum requirements will be invited to take the Written Examination
• A $25 non-refundable testing fee is required for all invited applicants

• Successful candidates will be invited to the Physical Agility test

• Interview and Technical Skills Assessment
• Fire skills evaluation based on NFPA Firefighter I (IFSTA Essentials – 5th edition)
• EMS skill evaluation based on BLS Standards (American Heart Association BLS for Health Care Providers)

• Top scoring candidates from the Assessment Center will be invited to a Fire Chief’s Interview.

• Selected candidates will be subject to a background investigation, a physical exam, drug screen and psychological evaluation

• Anticipated start date.  New Firefighter will be in Recruit Academy Training for the first two months (Monday – Friday, 0800 – 1700 hours)
