Mississippi | A human-caused wildfire broke out on February 11, 2016, around 1630 CST, located about four miles of Pascagouiams in the State’s Sandhill Crane Wildlife Refuge.  USFWS fire personnel were quickly dispatched and deployed immediately to the fire scene.  After the fire crossed over into Alabama, USFWS and AL Forestry Commission then entered into an Unified Command system.

The wildfire burned several thousand of acres of tall grass approximately 2.5 feet high and as well as littering and understory.

February 16, 2016 – 0930 CST

The fire has burned 4427 acres and is at a 50% containment status.

February 16, 2016 – 1900 CST

A recon flight was completed lowering the burned acres of 4427 down to 4246, bringing a total of 90% containment.

February 17, 2016 – 0930 CST

Firefighters were in the stages of monitoring, mop-up operations, clean up of snags and debris.  Rain had dropped in the area but more was expected.  15 Firefighters were still assigned to the incident.  4246 acres and the fire still was holding at a 90% containment status.

Over an inch of rain increased the successful stop of the forward progression of the fire, leadiing to a reduction in activity.

February 17, 2016 – 1900 CST

The Type 3 IMT transferred the incident back over to MS Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Reguge fire staff.

Incident Cooperators during the incident are: AL Forestry Commission, MS Forestry Commission, Jackson County, MS OEM, MS Dept of Marine Resources, Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Resources.

Great job to all Fire crews who were able to contain and stop the foward progression of this fire.  It definitely could have been easily out of hand but tireless efforts proved successful.
