UPDATE 1
May 20, 2021- Thursday – 1845 PT
A wildfire was discovered burning about 16 miles north of Tower and about 16 miles northwest of Ely, Minnesota on May 17th, that may have been ignited by a lightning strike.
It is also located northwest of Bezhik Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) on the LaCroix Ranger District in the Superior National Forest. The lake is west of nearby Big Moose Lake and north of Cummings Lake.
The fire is named the BEZHIK FIRE.

Command consists of the MNCIS Team Bravo and it’s manager is Incident Commander (IC) is Tom Roach.
Currently, the fire has active behavior with running, torching and flanking.
About 950 acres of timber have been lost but crews have reached a 10% containment status. Unfortunately, there have been four structure lost.
There about 120 total personnel with four crews, nine engines and zero helicopters.
The total cost-to-date for firefighting suppression and containment expenses, have reached $35,000 to date.
