Incident Summary
A wildfire called the SLATE FIRE is burning about 23 miles northwest of Flagstaff, along Highway 180 in the State of Arizona that originated on State Mountain.
The fire was called in by a Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputy on June 7, 2021, around 0300 hours MST.
The cause of the wildfire is unknown and under investigation.
Current Status
Fire has consumed 5,000 acres of pine, juniper, grass and brush. There is a 0% containment status.
Incident Timeline
June 7th — NF fire response. 20-plus acres. 23 miles north of Flagstaff near Highway 180 and border of USFS Kaibab NF. 50 personnel including 4 engines, 2 crews, water tender, dozer. Cause unknown.
June 8th — Hwy 180 closed. Helicopter on the fire ground using a bambi bucket to draw water to drop on the fire below.
June 9th — Fire grows to 2,060 acres. Highway 180 is still closed. Fire is moving northeast and now adjacent to the Kaibib National Forest. 150 personnel. 4 Hotshot crews, 1 hand crew, 8 engines, 2 water tenders, 2 dozers, 1 helicopter and miscellaneous overhead team and support staff. No structures under threat. Rec sites in the area are closed, including Red Mountain and State Mountain trailheads, Kendrick Cabin and portion of the AZ trail from Kelly Tank and Cedar Ranch.
