Sunday Update – August 29, 2021

California’s largest wildfire burning in the State is the DIXIE FIRE which ignited on July 13, 2021, around 1715 hours PT from an unknown (unreleased) source and is under investigation.

It is located about 15 miles northeast of Paradise and in the Feather River Canyon above the Cresta Powerhouse and Lake Almanor, California. This is burning in five Counties: Butte, Plumas, Shasta, Lassen and Tehama.

Fire management was under Bill See (CALFIRE IMT3 IC), Jerry McGowan (CIIMT1) and Jay Lusher (NPS/BLM) but has been transferred to the Great Basin Team 1 has occurred today.

This incident is broken up into various zones:

CalFire Team 1 managed the West Zone until August 8th, when the team transitioned to CalFire Team 3.

EAST ZONE

  • The East Zone was managed by the California Interagency Incident Management Team 2 until August 3rd, when the California Interagency Incident Management Team 4 transitioned into command.
  • On August 17th, California Interagency Incident Management Team 1 took command of the East Zone of the fire through August 28, 2021.
  • On August 29,2021, Great Basin Team 1 assumed command of the East Zone of the fire. 

WEST ZONE

  • CalFire Team 1 managed the West Zone until August 8th, when the team transitioned to CalFire Team 3.
  • RH remained low throughout the day
  • Fire resources continue to patrol fire lines; reinforce control lines
  • Control lines are holding near Janesville and Susanville
  • Some evacuation orders have been reduced to notifications only

EAST ZONE

  • The East Zone was managed by the California Interagency Incident Management Team 2 until August 3rd, when the California Interagency Incident Management Team 4 transitioned into command.
  • On August 17th, California Interagency Incident Management Team 1 took command of the East Zone of the fire through August 28, 2021.
  • On August 29,2021, Great Basin Team 1 assumed command of the East Zone of the fire. 
  • Spot fires – Walker/Grizzly became very afternoon this afternoon, both have merged together

Fire behavior is still active with wind-driven runs, group torching and short-range spotting. About 764,135 acres have been consumed. A 48% containment status has been reached by ground and air resources.

A $390 Million Dollar price tag has been reached for fire suppression and containment costs-to-date.
