Incident Summary
The SANDY FIRE is located about 22 miles northeast of Carnestown in the Big Cypress National Preserve (National Park Service) in the southern portion of Collier County, in the State of Florida.
The wildfire was discovered on May 1, 2023, around 1530 hours. The cause was determined to be lightning.
Current Status
The fire has burned about 16,595 acres and is now 35% contained. The estimated date of containment has been scheduled for May 18, 2023.
Threatened
Residential structures.
EVACUATIONS are in effect.
Fire Behavior
Fire behavior remains as active with wind-driven runs, short-range spotting and running.
Resources
There are about 162 total personnel along with two crews, 16 engines, and nine helicopters.

Damage Assessments
There are no injuries reported, nor are any structures damaged or destroyed at the time of this update.
The total of fire suppression and containment efforts has now topped out at $3.1 million.
