The South King Fire Department (Headquarters in Federal Way, Washington) has recently posted today on their website  that Firefighter John Moncrief has lost his battle with cancer – ruled as Line of Duty Death.

Firefighter John Moncrief died late Saturday from a cancer known to be caused from long term exposure to toxic products of combustion. It was reported that his family was present at his side when he died peacefully at home after a good day with his family and friends.

Firefighter Moncrief retired from South King Fire & Rescue in 2011 after a 22 year career. He felt it was time to retire and it was time to spend with his family and enjoy the fruits of his labor.  However,  he was diagnosed with cancer a few months after his retirement. The cancer was in an advanced stage by the time it was recognized but John chose to fight a hard battle anyway to spend time with his family. South King Firefighters held a successful blood drive in early July for John that was well  attended by fire agencies from all over King and Pierce Counties in Washington State.

John was known throughout his career as a thorough and diligent firefighter and this made him an excellent teacher to the many recruit firefighters assigned to his crew.

Funeral details are pending and he will be honored with full Line of Duty Death (LODD) recognition.

Stay tuned.  We will update as information is provided for those who are interested in attending his funeral or sending their sympathies.
