The Rail Fire originally started on July 31st at 1430 (2:30pm) by an unknown cause.
Location
The Rail Fire began on the Wallowa-Whitman NF, is burning approximately 5 miles West of Unity, OR.
Size
31,127 acres.
Fire Fuels
Bug-killed lodge pole pine stands with a large standing dead and down component throughout the fire area.
Current Fire Conditions
Moderate fire behavior with group torching, spotting and wind-driven runs.
Damage Assessment
8/21/2016: Incident Commander Shawn Sheldon reported today that an outbuilding has been burned near the Table Mountain Lookout. “The lookout itself is fine,” said Sheldon. “We had wrapped it with reflective aluminum sheets, and it withstood the flames. But an outhouse in disuse was destroyed, and a three-sided storage structure was damaged.” The working outhouse at the parking lot, which had also been wrapped in aluminum, remains intact.
8/22/2016: Table Top Lookout is still intact but an old outhouse was destroyed.
No structures have been lost or damaged.
No injuries have been reported.
