Updated 0645 PST
Last night, a 61-year old Mount Vernon Police Officer responding to a man shot by another on LaVenture and Fir came under fire from a male suspect shooting outside of a residence.
The Officer was shot to the back of the head and an “Officer Down” call went out immediately. He was immediately rushed to nearby Skagit Valley Hospital and later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. He was in surgery and said to be in critical in the ICU.
He is a 30-year Police veteran and well respected and liked among his fellow Officers.
Fast backup responded from Mount Vernon PD, Anacortes PD, Bellingham PD, Skagit and Snohomish Counties and Washington State Patrol. There were unknown high number of LE Agencies present.
This is something Officers never want to hear when a fellow brother or sister has to call for immediate assistance. It was pretty chaotic listening to the scanner feed last night and being walked through the emotions/motions of what goes through a Police Officer’s head.
The suspect who is well- known to Police as a violent criminal, barricaded himself inside a residence within an unknown number of hostages. A Hostage negotiator was brought in. At the time of the last presser last night, the Washington State Patrol PIO did not have the number of hostages.
He was arrested along with two persons-of-interest around 0130 PST this morning.
His motive was unclear at the time of this posting.
Please keep the Officer, his immediate/Law Enforcement Families and those impacted by his Line-of-Duty injury. We hope for a good turnaround physically and mentally.
