A SWAT team with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office located the lone wolf suspect deceased with a weapon nearby. It is believed by Law Enforcement that he is the only shooter due to their ongoing investigation. According to the local Sheriff’s Office, two firefighters were killed, and a third just got out of surgery and is fighting for his life. They also believe the shooter lured the firefighters into the area by intentionally setting ablaze a fire, where they would be dispatched to suppress and contain. When the fire response arrived on the scene, they were immediately met with sniper fire, hitting multiple firefighters and resulting in numerous gunshot wounds.
A several miles-long procession started at the Kootenai Health Center in Idaho to the Spokane County Coroner’s Office in Washington State.
We are sincerely sorry for these tragic in-the-line-of-duty deaths, for those who were injured, and to their grieving families, friends, and fellow Public Safety members. Often, Public Safety members and Fire Service personnel train for active shooters situations. Though highly trained in knowing what to do during an “active shooter” incident, it is quite unnatural to go through something this traumatic. We will never forget the Legacy you left behind and the lives you have saved and touched. – LR Swenson

A wildfire on the east side of Canfield Mountain Natural Area prompted the Dispatch Center to deploy firefighters from the Kootenai County Fire & Rescue and Coeur d’Alene Fire Department to respond to the fire around 1321 hours.
As they were responding and had arrived on the scene, the firefighters began taking on immediate on unexpected sniper fire from an unknown suspect(s), hitting multiple fire personnel and killing two of them.
The KCSO Sheriff released a statement about how firefighters were drawn into the area by an intentionally set fire, then ambushed by the active shooter or shooters.
Local, State, County, and Federal Police were said to be still taking on a sniper at the time of the press conference at 1650 hours PDT. They stated they were prepared to neutralize suspect or suspects if that opportunity comes up, they will have to do what they have been trained to do. It is unknown where the location or locations of the suspect or if there are multiple suspects.
Meanwhile, there is a wildfire burning on Canfield Mountain that is just too dangerous for fire suppression and containment resources to fight, and therefore is unchecked and burning out of control. At the time of the press release, there were no set evacuation orders issued by the County. However, they are asking folks to SHELTER IN PLACE and AVOID THE AREA.
