
A raging fire ripped through a West Seattle single-family residence in the 8400 block of 20th Avenue W. on May 1, 2012, after 5:00 p.m. Monday night. When the first company arrived, Engine 11 found fire coming out of the living room, basement and kitchen windows. Access to the basement was delayed due to items blocking the door.
Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately 30 minutes before they were ordered to abandon the building for their own safety. It was then being fought defensively. The accidental fire was due to improperly distinguished smoking materials. It took fire crews an hour to knock down the fire. Fire crews remained on scene to mop up hot spots and for fire watch.

The initial call came in at 1719 hours and the full response was initiated. Units responded were Aid 14, Deputy 1, Air 9, Battalion 22, Engine 29, Staff 10, Ladder 1, Battalion 7, Engine 11, Engine 32, Medic 32, Safety 2, Engine 26 and Ladder 17.

At 1727 hours, Ladder 11 was dispatched with Medic enroute at 1736 hours. At 1740 hours two engines were called out; Engine 13 and Engine 5. Later 1744 hours, Engine 36 was deployed. Then Engines 10 at 5:55pm.

Later at 1755 hours, the PIO, Marshal 5 (FIU Investigator) and Chaplain 5 were called in. Medic 10 responded at 1759 hours.
Fire watch was setup with Engine 30 at 2034 hours answering and later being relieved by Engine 32 at 2237 hours.
There were two adults, one in her 80’s that was checked out by medics deemed not needing medical treatment and another in his 50’s with burns to his hands and smoke inhalation. He was transported by AMR to Harborview Medical Center.

Seattle Fire Buff Society REHAB Support Members responded: Lee Kane, Support 4; Eric, 5 and Lisa, 9 Swenson, Marc L. Lorrain 6 and David Sonsteng.
There were no injuries to fire fighters. Estimated damage was $150,000.00 to the structure and $100,000.00 to the structure. Red Cross volunteers provided two adults with temporary food and shelter.
