Closures:

The following closures are in effect for the public, excluding residents within the closure area:

– A Forest Closure is in effect for the areas of the Klamath National Forest around the Butler Fire and Salmon River Complex.

– Highway 93 (Forks of Salmon Road) is closed at the Highway 96 intersection and above the Forks of Salmon store. No access to North Fork/Sawyers Bar Road is available at this time.

Summary:

– High humidity on the Butler Fire slowed activity enough to delay planned ignitions today on the ridge above Butler Flat.

– Crews will attempt to light backing fires in this area tonight if conditions allow. Structure protection actions continue in the Butler Flat and Forks of Salmon areas.

– A primary goal is to continue monitoring conditions along the Salmon River Road to prevent fire spread across the Salmon River.

– Firefighters have completed the fire line on Hotelling Ridge from Highway 93 to the Trinity Alps Wilderness boundary.

– Indirect line preparation actions are continuing on the south and west sides of fire.

– Improved visibility allowed aircraft to fly today in support of operations.

– NIMO Team (Quisenberry) assumed command of the Butler Fire today with Nor Cal Team 1 (Minton), Friday, August 16th, 2013 at 6:00 am

At this time, an Evacuation Advisory remains in effect in and around Forks of Salmon.

Today’s Actions: 

– Firefighters extinguished a number of spot fires today and continued mop up and patrol of handlines.

– Crews monitored and held the handline from Yellow Jacket Ridge down to Sawyers Bar Road.

– Burnout operations were successful along the handline from Tanners Peak Ridge down to Sawyers Bar Road.

– Tonight, fire crews will mop up, patrol and hold firelines to reduce the threat of spot fires.

– Crews will continue emphasis on patrolling and holding handline from Yellow Jacket Ridge down to Sawyers Bar Road.

– Structure defense will continue around the community of Sawyers Bar.

Fire Behavior and Air Quality: 

– Today’s fire behavior included active backing and isolated single tree torching.

– On the west side of slow interior fire growth is expected due to lower temperatures and increased humidity.

– Continued flanking and burn out between Murderers Gulch and Dead Horse Gulch is also anticipated.

– On the east side interior fire movement will back down to Jackass Gulch.

– As cool moist air pushes in, overnight humidity recovery is expected to increase.

– Clean air respite centers are still available at the Happy Camp Community Resource Center, HUB Communities Resource Center in Montague, Scott Valley Family Resource Center in Fort Jones, Madrone Senior Center at the Yreka Community Center, Mt. Shasta Community Resource Center and Dorris City Hall.

– A daily air quality report for Forks of Salmon, Sawyers Bar, Etna, Fort Jones and Yreka will be distributed with the morning update and posted on the Klamath National Forest Website athttp://www.fs.usda.gov/klamath.

Closure Order: 

– A Forest Order is in effect around the Salmon River Complex and Butler Fires on the Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests.

– Sawyers Bar Road remains closed to public traffic from Etna Summit to Forks of Salmon.

– Residents, with proof of residency, will be allowed through the closure. Residents may encounter one-way traffic control within the closure area.

Evacuations:

– An Evacuation Advisory remains in effect for all residents along the North Fork Salmon River from Kelly Gulch to Idlewild and Mule Bridge to the Marble Mountain Wilderness Boundary.
