INCIDENT SUMMARY
TONTO NATIONAL FOREST | A wildfire is burning approximately 10 miles to the southwest of the nearest town of Payson on the Payson Ranger District in Arizona.
The fire was determined to have started on Thursday, May 16, 2019.
CAUSE
The cause is unknown at this time but there have been reports of lightning strikes in the area that occurred on Sunday, May 12, 2019.
SIZE UP
The wildfire has been contained to three acres but had grown one acre overnight. The fire is burning in steep and rugged terrain within the 2004 Willow Fire burn scar.
FIRE STATUS
The fire is currently being only monitored by air resources and fire behavior is said to be moving very slowly.
SMOKE CONDITIONS
Fire Managers state there may be smoke that could be seen on a continued basis off to the west from Payson and by drivers on State Highway 87. Hikers are being advised to use caution when visiting the area.
