JUNE 8, 2019 – SATURDAY – 2360 HOURS PDT

Incident Summary

The SAND FIRE began on June 8th around 1450 hours PDT.  The official cause has not been released yet via CAL FIRE, whom is the lead fire agency.

It is located about seven miles NNW of Guinida and 92 miles NNE of San Francisco, California.

Current Status

The fire has now destroyed 1,700 acres.  Fire behavior is extremely active with a high rate of spread, running, backing and spotting.

There is still a 0% containment status.

Firefighters are working in Capay Valley near the top of the town of Guinda.  No structures have been damaged or destroyed.  They were challenged with hot and dry conditions along with winds that were coming out of the northeast at 20 miles-per-hour  – as well as working on very steep and brushy slopes.

Hwy 16 is closed from Hwy 20 to the town of Brooks, California.

There are no reports of injuries reported.


There is a total of 500 fire personnel along with 38 engines, 4 fire crews, 4 helicopters, 5 dozers and 5 water tenders assigned to this incident.

Incident Cooperators include CAL FIRE (Lead Agency), CAL OES, Yolo County Sheriff Office, CHP,  Sacramento County and many other fire agencies in the State.

Some reported units dispatched/deployed include:

* Sacramento County : Type 3 Strike Team that includes: 1 from Sacramento FD, Metro FD and Consumes FD (BC1, Engines 318, 343, 363, 372 and 37).

*UC Davis FD:  Brush 34.

Evacuation Information

Evacuations are in effect for those on County Rd 41. CAL FIRE evacuation map

Current Fire Weather

As of 2345 hours PDT:  73*F temps, partly cloudy with winds at 12 mph. Humidity is at 20%.  Weather forecast for Sunday are 94*F temps and partly sunny with low temps in mid 60’s.  Monday through Wednesday of the following week are expected to hit 102-105*F temps with partly sunny skies.

There is a RED FLAG WARNING for all of Yolo County.

Smoke  Reports

Smoke reports are rolling in through eyewitness accounts as posted on Social Media.  Some of those have been reported whom are in San Rafael, Emeryville, North Napa, Napa Valley, near the Airport (south of on I-5) and from Mt. St. Helena are just a few of the many.

The area of Rumsey is considered as an unincorporated community inside of Yolo County that is located 18 miles northwest of Esparato in the Capay Valley and in the northwestern part of the County.  It sits at an elevation of 420 fee.
