Update 1 – June 2, 2023, 1800 hours PDT

The Volunteer Fire was caused by lightning and sparked a start on May 23, 2023, near Volunteer Canyon in the burn scar of the 2021 Rafael Fire in the Coconino National Forest and 16 miles west of Flagstaff, Arizona.

There are currently 80 total personnel assigned to this incident from several agencies, which include the US Forest Service, the US Department of Agriculture, Coconino National Forest, and the Flagstaff Ranger District.

No structures are under direct threat and no evacuation orders or notices are in effect.

There have been about 23 acres of ponderosa pine and juniper consumed.

This incident is under the management of Incident Commander Sara Sweeney (Trainee) and Brian Blanchard, a Type 3 IMT.

Current fire behavior has been observed as minimal with creeping and smoldering activities.
