INCIDENT SUMMARY

— The Lafitte Fire broke out on October 17, 2023, from an undetermined cause that is still under close scrutiny.

— It is located in the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve and about .5 miles north of Jean Lafitte and 1.5 miles north of Barataria (Jefferson County), Louisiana.

CURRENT STATUS

Command

— The incident is in Unified Command with National Park Service, Fulton Jeansonne, and an ICT 3 Jefferson Parish, Don Robertson, Fire Chief.

Containment Status

— There has been a 90% containment status reach.

Size Up

— The fire has only burned about 147 acres of tall grass and brush.

— It is also burning in a marsh with grass and brush as well as timber stringers.

— Extended drought conditions are creating heavy fire loads.

— At this time, the fire behavior has been observed as minimal with smoldering activity.
