OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

Firefighters first due on the scene of the Old Economy Lumber site, were greeted by heavy fire throughout the two-story commercial building in the 700 block of High Street on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

The fire quickly escalated and the IC requested the first alarm to a second within minutes, then to a third, and eventually at the end of the incident to a four-alarm.

Multiple exposure buildings had become a concern for multiple Fire Officials.

The fire was eerily too close for comfort as it burned next to an active railroad line.

All rail traffic was temporarily stopped in both directions while the fire raged on.

Reports of a fire at the old lumberyard was first reported at 1945 hours and later put out at 2300 hours PDT.

Firefighters were on Firewatch throughout the night.

No injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported.

We are assuming it may be a while for the exact cause to be determined by Fire Investigators. We reached out on the night of the first pressers by the Fire Department of a preliminary cause and waiting for a response.

Property damage (losses) and the cost-to-date of fire suppression and containment efforts are unknown at the time of this post.
