The NISQUALLY JOHN FIRE is located on Wawawai River Road in Whitman County, with some media outlets and apparently some Fire Departments are calling it a different name: Canyon Fire. We are going to keep it this wildfire incident unless other Fire Agencies change it.
The Fire ignited on Friday and multiple units SES 4305, and SES Dozer 45 were dispatched through the WA Northeast Interagency Communications Center at 0902 hours PT. A
Additionally State Mobe resources across the State are being deployed to the incident, with a Type 3 Team on order.

Whitman County Fire District #14: Firefighters were on the scene of a fast-moving wildfire just before 1000 hours this morning on Wawawai Road near Nisqually John Landing. Fire Officials are asking folks to stay away from this roadway and Steptoe Canyon Road. They stated that water on the Snake River will be shutdown in the area as this will be a water supply for air assets to draw from and they to part all users in this area.
Whitman County Fire District #12: Resources with this fire agency are volunteer firefighters from the Pullman area.
Clarkston Professional Firefighters Local 2299: they were requested as mutual aid from Whitman County Fire District. They stated though they have low staffing today of only three, which they normally have four memberrs, they responded in brush 81 to assist. Two personnel met with Brusth 81 to recycle so the duty crew could backfill the City fire station/continue with service calls.
Walla Walla County Fire District #14: This fire agency is calling the wildfire incident as “Canyon Fire” which is in the same area as the one we are updating on and we are assuming they are meaning the Nisqually John Fire. Washington State Department of Natural Resources Fire: WADNR has updated the size of the fire to include, 1,150 acres as burned, with an unknown containment status. A Type 3 Team is on order will assume command of the fire on Saturday, June 15, 2024. Incident #WAWFS-1303.

Asotin Fire District 1 Volunteers (Clarkston): Per the ACFD1’s Facebook page, they stated they were called out to a fire around 0800 hours and those throughout the Lewis Clark Valley to respond to a wildfire burning along the Snake River about 12 miles west of Clarkston. Winds were said to be gusting to 30-40 miles per hour this morning and the fire moving to the south. No homes at this time were considered as being threatened. WA DNR stated was supply air asset support with copters and scooper planes. The cause of the fire was aid to be unknown and under investigation. Smoke from the fire from the press release (just after 1400 hours PT) stated smoke the fire was moving into the Lewiston Clarkston Valley.
We have reached out to numerous Fire partners for an update as it appears some are reporting in wildcad.net as 200 acres to some medica outlets stating 750+ acres with a 0% containment status. We will post more as additional accurate details come to light. – Ed.

Another wildfire with the same name as NISQUALLY JOHN FIRE burning in the same area around the same time (1000 hours) on the Snake River about 11 miles northeast of Clarkston and 306 miles north of Seattle actually began on July 4, 2018. During this 2018, wildfire, the fire had burned up to 1,350 acres of grass and brush and was considered at a 80% containment status on our first update on July 7, 2018. The cause was unknown at that time and under investigation. About 124 total personnel, including Whitman County Fire District #14 and Spokane County Fire District #8, with four crews and eight engines were assigned to the incident. Local and State resources were also deployed and as a State Mobe incident. Staging and the ICP were located at the Colton School. About 12 structures at that time were being threatened.
