Fire Status:
(9/7: Hotter and dryer conditions are expected today which will dry out the fuels even more than yesterday and increase fire behavior. Fire managers expect dead and down logs within the fire perimeter to continue to smoke and burn out. Crews and aircraft will focus on improving and holding the fireline along with seeking out hot spots and extinguishing them.
Yesterday smoke from the Forks Complex (10 miles north) was seen and smelled in the Hoopa Valley. Given the current weather situation with increased smoke from the Forks Complex light winds and a temperature inversion managers are concerned that smoke could settle into the valley and remain for a few days prior to the next weather event forecasted for the middle of next week.
Rehab of contingency lines continues on the western and northern portions of the fire.)
As the day progressed temperatures increased relative humidity dropped and a drying wind blew over the fire. This combination quickly dried out the fuels and the fire became more active. During a reconnaissance flight fire manages observed several individual logs smoking and burning within the interior of the fire perimeter. These hot spots posed no threat to the line.
Crews were successful in completing the construction of fireline in those areas that are accessible. This includes the full perimeter of the spot fire northwest of the main fire. Tomorrow crews will focus on improving and holding the line as conditions continue to favor active burning.
In addition they will also continue with rehabilitation efforts. These efforts consist of the construction of water bars on dozer lines. Water bars act as a channel by break up the ground flow of heavy rain reducing erosion.
